Strategy & Values

At ABN AMRO, we always aim to put our clients first and to create sustainable, long-term value for all our stakeholders – clients, shareholders, employees and society at large.

It has always been important for us to build a strong culture around a set of values that meant something to us individually and as a firm. These are the principles that underpin everything we do as a team and with counterparties with whom we interact. Rick Torken Country Executive UK

Our Strategy

Our long-term strategy stands firm. We are client oriented; We invest in the future; We maintain a moderate risk profile; We pursue sustainable growth. Our goal is to create long-term value for all our stakeholders – our clients, our people, investors and society at large.
For our clients, we are committed to offering the best possible insights and advice as well as easy access to our products, network and services. For our employees, we promise to give them the opportunity to make the most of their potential and to grow and develop. For our investors, we promise to pursue sustainable growth and attractive revenues while maintaining a moderate risk profile. In everything we do, we understand the risks we take. Our pledge is to be socially conscious and to invest in the future.
We are acutely aware that we are a cornerstone of the economy. As such, we want to make a significant, transparent contribution to society, one which is primarily, but not solely, financial.
This also places demands on our own people and how we treat each other. We know what we stand for and consciously choose to be part of this bank. Our flexibility and desire to be autonomous mean we want to constantly develop. Our job is to bring out the best in ourselves. Only then can we be the best bank for our clients.
To meet the changing needs of our clients, we have set the following priorities: to offer clients valuable expertise; to offer them an inspiring and convenient experience; to innovate our offering and grow by using our expertise; and to apply Agile methods, focusing on boosting the efficiency of our internal processes.

Our Principles:

1. Providing our clients with the best solutions
2. Taking responsibility
3. Only taking risks we understand
4. Committed to sustainable business principles
5. Passionate professionals
6. Building relationships through collaboration

Medium-Term Strategic Priorities

Deliver expertise
We want to offer our clients valuable financial and sector expertise, both digitally and face-to-face. Our expertise is our strength; our knowledge and experience distinguish us from other banks. We have been named the best private bank and best corporate bank in the Netherlands for several years now, and our Mobile Banking app for Retail and Private Banking clients is one of the most highly rated banking apps in the Netherlands. Up to 2020, we want to develop our expertise further: we are strengthening and broadening our financial and sector knowledge, and we intend to use that know-how to pursue growth in more countries. We are also opening up our network in order to assist our clients more effectively, for example by forging new partnerships.
Enhance the client experience
In the years ahead, ABN AMRO will make digitalisation an even bigger priority. We want to enable clients to perform their transactions and place their trade orders anytime, anywhere and in any way they want. To do this, we are reshaping our IT landscape, investing in new technologies and joining forces with fintechs.
Innovate & Grow
We will be gradually growing our business in the coming years. Corporate Banking will use its sector expertise to serve corporates in Germany, France, Belgium and the UK and will also expand its ECT services, both geographically and by spreading into new sectors such as Natural resources and Food. Private Banking will enhance its activities in Northwest Europe while harmonising its IT platforms where possible. Meanwhile, MoneYou will add payment services to its product offering and will become a completely digital full-service European retail innovator. We also plan to introduce new digital innovators for Corporate Banking and Private Banking.

Deliver fast
We put our clients first and we are accelerating our efforts and digitising our products and services. We are committed to creating an organisation and culture based on trust, where there is space for new ideas and new ways of working. Our organisation will become simpler and have fewer layers, and we will do our work with fewer people. The businesses and IT will work in multidisciplinary teams to develop and improve products based on feedback from our clients. Agile working accelerates our time-to-market, involves clients in our product development and gives our employee, more autonomy and responsibility, making their work more meaningful.
